In domestic terms, the shooting of over a hundred protesters on Kyiv’s Maidan in early 2014 ‘ended twenty-two years of generally non-violent politics in Ukraine and turned a dramatic new page in its history’ (337). Unlike the Orange Revolution, the outcome of which fell far short of popular expectations, the more recent Revolution of Dignity marks a clear rupture in Ukrainian history for both domestic and international reasons. On two separate occasions, Ukrainians have captured global attention through their reliance on popular protests in order to make their voices heard: the Orange Revolution (2004) and the Revolution of Dignity (2014).
While independence was ultimately obtained at the ballot box, the democratic process has proved to be far from perfect in post-Soviet Ukraine.
In the twentieth century alone, three short-lived and unsuccessful attempts at independence were made before it was finally gained at the fourth attempt in December 1991. Independence has not come easily to Ukraine.
